WellSentinel™ - passive well integrity monitoring

Passive solution for advanced subsea well integrity monitoring.

In contrast to conventional subsea well monitoring and leak detection methods, WellSentinel™ is a long-term remote solution, operating without the need for active power or data communication.

When leaking gas and/or fluid is passively detected, an alert sequence is triggered. This releases an alert beacon to the surface, which then sends an individual coded signal via satellite to alert the well owner.

This unique technology reduces operating costs by lowering risk and reducing the need for repeated vessel-based inspection. The non-invasive and easy to deploy technology also reduces the emissions created by marine operations and gives an early warning on unwanted loss of containment (LoC), averting potential long-term environmental impact associated with undetected leaking subsea assets.

Easily integrated with existing systems, our range of technologies can be applied across all stages of the well lifecycle.

Lower risk with continuous monitoring.

Our passive systems deliver constant and reliable assurance of subsea integrity, helping give confidence to all stakeholders involved with in-situ asset monitoring.

Reduce costs by cutting vessel-based inspection.

The technology reduces the frequency of vessel-based inspection and assists asset life-extension or P&A deferral.

Protect the environment by having an early alert.

Our systems demonstrate strong environmental stewardship, cut the carbon footprint created by manual inspection methods and help manage unwanted subsea emissions.

How it works

WellSentinel™ works by gathering and physically detecting leaking gas and/or fluid material in the subsea environment.

A specialised gathering system directs any escaped material onto our proprietary trigger mechanism housed within the system.

Detection of this material begins the alert sequence, mechanically degrading the triggers.

The system’s trigger mechanism can be configured to react with a range of materials.

  • Gas – gas triggers are set to react to typical natural gas (C1 – C5)
  • Oil – oil triggers are set to respond to liquid hydrocarbons
  • Tracer – tracer triggers are configured to react to our tracer fluid (SWIFT), which is sealed in the in-well
  • CO2 – CO2 triggers are set to respond to CO2 when wells are repurposed or at carbon capture sites
  • Mixed – multiple different trigger types can be installed in the same system, permitting detection of various materials
  • Custom – Sentinel Subsea can custom engineer triggers to meet the needs of any application

Alert

Once the triggers are degraded, an individually coded alert beacon is released to surface.

At surface, the alert beacon turns on and communicates via satellite. Each alert beacon is individually coded to the well, allowing for the operator to rapidly identify a subsea integrity issue.

Features

Continuous monitoring

Our passive technology constantly monitors the integrity of subsea assets, sending an alert if there is an issue. This is achieved without the complexity of active subsea power or data communication. The system operates remotely and once deployed subsea provides a continuous assurance of subsea integrity.

Long term

With up to a 25-year deployment lifecycle, our systems are robust and designed to survive in harsh subsea environments. Deployable at any depth, the technology has been treated with an advanced marine growth protection to ensure long term operation.

Simple to deploy

Easily integrated with existing subsea structures and equipment, our technologies have been designed to keep installation and operation simple. Our systems are compact and can be deployed from most offshore vessels with a single lift to depth.

Gathering systems

The WellSentinel™ technology is deployed via a suite of gathering systems, allowing for monitoring across an extensive range of potential subsea well types and structures.

WellSentinel™ Oyster

WellSentinel™ Oyster is installed and fixed directly onto a subsea structure.

The Oyster gathering systems acts as a collection mechanism for any leakage from the subsea structure, focusing the leak toward the detection technology housed within. The system is designed to fit various protective structures and Xmas tree canopies, maintaining overtrawlability and dropped object protection.

Sentinel Coral
WellSentinel™ Coral

WellSentinel™ Coral is installed directly onto the wellhead or conductor.

The Coral gathering system is deployed similarly to a standard Temporary Abandonment (Debris) Cap and can be designed to fit a range of wellhead sizes (18-3/4”, 16-3/4”, 13-5/8”, 30”). Installed directly onto the wellhead, it is a quick and easy operation to swap out any existing components.

WellSentinel™ Frond

WellSentinel™ Frond is deployed onto the mudline around the asset of interest.

The Frond gathering system offers wider wellsite coverage and can be deployed if there is limited space on the asset or structure. The system gathers material flowing with the subsea current and is positioned following analysis of subsea tidal patterns.
